    • Who needs a phone book?  You can look up phone numbers and search for businesses online.  With switchboard, enter the name, city and state, and up pops the phone number of the business.

    • To verify spellings, word usage or definitions, use Webster's online dictionary.  The site has a thesaurus, and different versions of the Webster's dictionary, and comes in handy while writing letters, compiling documents or composing an E-mail.

    • Working on taxes, and need to locate some instructions or forms?  You can download electronic copies of many forms and instructions.  On the web site you can also locate the current mileage reimbursement rate, and IRA contribution limits.

    • Cannot find what you are looking for?  This is your one stop shop to find anything and everything on the web.  It not only searches web pages, but you can find pictures, search newsgroups, read the news, go shopping, and find local shops and restaurants.

    • Forget to record mileage for a business trip that you drove?  Mapping we sites can help.  Go to the site and enter the directions from the starting point to the destination.  At the end of the directions, it will report the number of miles from start to finish.

    • There's a lot of information for small businesses, including free advice, success stories and online seminars.

    • This site provides a starting point to get free credit reports from the three credit bureaus.  As of September 1, 2005, the credit bureaus are required to provide one annual credit report per year.

    • Gotten E-mail about a virus or request for donation that looks suspicious?  Before forwarding it on, visiting this link provides a list of hoaxes, E-mails that ask to be passed along to others, promoting a fictional virus or trying to spawn the recipient into action under false pretenses.  (eBay and PayPal will never send an email asking for your account info.  These emails are hoaxes and should be removed immediately).

    • There are some new gadgets that can monitor an automobileís use.  One is the Road Safety RS-1000, a box approximately six inches square that can hook into the data link in many cars. It keeps tabs on the speed and turns, responding with different alerts if driving habits are outside of acceptable norms.  The device records activity, which can be downloaded to a personal computer via a USB connection and reviewed. The unit runs approximately $280.

    • Donít have the latest release of Office, and need to open a file that someone else sent you?  Visit Microsoft to get free utilities that will read Office 2003 files, including viewers for Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

    • There is a free utility called CutePDF that you can install and use to generate PDF files.  It works like a printer. When the software is installed, it creates a printer named CutePDF Writer that you can select when printing a document. Instead of printing to a printer, it generates a PDF file in the printed format.   The files that are created are compatible with Adobe Acrobat reader and may be viewed by anyone who has the Adobe reader installed.

    • Microsoft has entered the mapping game, with a new web site.  While the site is currently in beta, it provides some new features to compete against current mapping sites.  It includes satellite photos, and a birdís eye view available for metropolitan areas via pictures taken from a plane. Other capabilities include a cookie-based scratch pad for retaining locations that youíve selected before, and a click-and-drag feature used to define a map area for enlargement.

    • Your internet connection has two speeds associated with it Ė an upload speed and a download speed.  The upload speed affects how fast you can send to others, which is useful when sending messages with large attachments.  The download speed affects how quickly you receive from others, how quickly you can download files and speed of surfing the internet.  If you would like to check out the speed of your connection, this page will test and provide both the upload and download speeds.
